We are a collective of active and former substance users, community members, and frontline workers united in outrage against recent attacks on harm reduction and Homeless Health Care Los Angeles. The City and County of Los Angeles have allowed the dismantling of proven, evidence-based, life-saving public health interventions and terminated contracts that will put vulnerable communities and over 130 dedicated frontline harm reduction workers' livelihoods at risk. Ending these programs removes a vital safety net for our community’s most vulnerable residents and violates the community’s demands outlined in the Skid Row Action Plan that specifically asked for more low-barrier harm reduction services.
Most of the 137 laid-off employees like Reyna above, bring invaluable lived experience with homelessness, criminalization, substance use, and mental health challenges to serve their communities. These cuts not only jeopardize their livelihoods but put both them and the entire Skid Row community at greater risk of the very crises LA County is supposedly committed to preventing.
